I’ve asked the members of the writing class I teach to bring in a book they are reading if they don’t have a WIP. In our practice for more dynamic settings, I will ask them to read their book as a writer, to analyze the setting in each chapter, and then to re-write it in one of the many ways we’ve studied.
What are you reading now?
Last month I joined California Writers Club, Tri-Valley Branch’s Social Media group. The first assignment I had was to write bios in various lengths:
2-line bio (140 characters)
Short bio (50 words)
Medium Bio (100 words)
Long bio (400 to 600 words)
A bio to give for a speaker introduction (250 to 300 words)
The latter included five fun facts about me that wouldn’t be common knowledge.
A few of my fun facts are:
I like to drive golf carts but I don’t play golf.
I want to own an art gallery, but I don’t want to sell the art.
My favorite dessert is homemade Biscotti with a cup of hot Jasmine Green Tea.
I had two art showings in a local cafe. One was with photographs I had taken and the other was with my black and white abstract paintings.
The bio exercise is fun but it takes a while. The critiques from other group members helped to polish all of the bios so they are ready when needed.
